Clarks Desert Boot Ska Edition is set to be released shortly celebrating Ska which started in Jamaica back in the 60′s. The genre of music was then adopted by British Mods and Punks in the 70′s which helped in the genre’s worldwide popularity.
Clarks Originals are paying their respects to Britain’s 2 Tone Ska era by launching the Clarks Original Desert Boot Ska Edition which is part of their British Rock Royalty collection.
The shoe is is constructed with a black and white checkerboard pattern on the uppers, which happens to be a pattern that is strongly associated with the Ska movement. Black suede material makes up the forefoot and tongue, which accompanies the Desert Boot classic crepe soles. In addition a custom British Rock Royalty hang tag that features the Union Jack and a few musical instruments is included which adds a little extra to the the design.

Solamon Plans to Build Largest Caribbean Solar Farm in Jamaica
The Canada-based Solamon company announced its plan to build the largest solar power plant in the Caribbean in Jamaica, at an estimated cost of $450 million.
The programme aims to improve the country’s energy infrastructure and attract additional investment in green technologies.
“In order to implement a solution of this magnitude, several Parishes are being considered as future homes of one of three 50-acre plots that, when conjoined, will provide the Jamaican people with 60 megawatts of clean electricity,” said Ainsley Brown, senior vice president at Solamon. “This programme represents a comprehensive approach to renewable energy development, energy diversification, job creation and training for the 21st century.”
In December, the government announced that the use of alternative in energies in Jamaica had nearly doubled since 2010.
Jamaica has a growing solar movement, according to Roger Chang, President of the Jamaica Solar Energy Association.

An overhaul to Barbados’ agriculture sector is long overdue, according to prominent agriculturalist Dr Chelston Brathwaite.
Brathwaite said Barbados is still operating a model inherited from the pre-independence period.
“That model has run its course,” he said. “We have changed education, health, [and] our infrastructure but we have not changed the agricultural sector.”
It’s a view shared by Agriculture Minister Dr David Estwick, who said that the sector in its current form was “stymied and constrained.”
Agriculture has remained between 3.5 and 3.7 percent of GDP in the country for the last 15 years, the Minister said.
“I believe we can make agriculture a viable and even greater contributor to the Gross Domestic Product,” he said. “For too long, there has been a view that agriculture is dead or dying but … I believe we can make the sector a vibrant, financially viable entity.”
Estwick was speaking to members of the country’s new National Agricultural Commission, which held its first meeting on Friday.
Secondary schools across Antigua and Barbuda will get campus-wide Wi-Fi internet as part of the government’s Technology for Education 20/20 Initiative.
As part of the programme, LIME will install Wi-Fi access points on all public and private secondary school compounds.
On Monday, representatives from the Ministry of Information and Lime Antigua Ltd held a meeting with school principals to discuss the rollout of the plan.
“I am very convinced, having spent a lot of time studying this, that having students and staff across the Internet can be a great equalizer in an increasingly competitive world,” said Information Minister Dr Edmond Mansoor. “We want to stay competitive … and any child starting from grade 1 who is not on the Internet is at a serious disadvantage.”
At this stage, the pilot project will begin at the Baptist Academy of Antigua and may begin next week.

First Sleep School Opens In Grenada In The Caribbean
I’m not alone in having trouble sleeping. When stress levels are sky-high, technology has us on call 24/7 and working parents struggle to fit everything into their day, it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t.
Unsurprisingly, 75 per cent of the workforce gets less than the recommended eight hours of sleep a night, according to a study by the Mental Health Foundation. Most of us will experience transient insomnia (a short bout of disturbed sleep lasting less than a week or two) at some point in our lives, caused by anything from stress, pregnancy or bereavement – or a chemical, such as excess alcohol. But when it becomes difficult to initiate or maintain sleep for two to four weeks, this is defined as acute insomnia.
‘How you behave in response to sleep determines your ability to sleep,’ says insomnia specialist Dr Guy Meadows. ‘Ask a normal sleeper what they do to sleep and they will say “nothing”. Ask an insomniac and they will give you a long list, including warm milk, hot baths and lavender on the pillow.’
Meadows, who thinks the cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) approach to sleep problems isn’t working, is pioneering a new technique called acceptance and commitment therapy. ‘My approach to insomnia combines a sense of increased awareness, acceptance and a non- judgmental attitude,’ he says. ‘It’s about accepting then letting go of your insomnia in order to allow your brain’s natural ability to sleep to emerge by itself.’
Meadows runs a practice in Britain and has just launched Sleep School in the Caribbean (www.thesleepschool.org). My first thought was: ‘Why do I need to go halfway around the world to learn how to sleep?’ But when you add up the things we might do to relax and get a better night’s sleep – a massage, yoga and exercise classes, and possibly a sleep workshop – then factor in the cost of a week away, that cost soon adds up. Which is why the idea of Meadows’s Sleep School at a well-being retreat makes sense.
The Sleep School is run at the luxury holistic resort of La Source in Grenada – where it’s free to guests. The hotel’s philosophy is geared around wellbeing and relaxation, and guests can enjoy hourly activities and a free treatment each day.
‘What draws me to this type of holiday are the masterclasses,’ says Sally Lloyd, 35, a sales consultant from Maidenhead. ‘When I found out there was a Sleep School here it was a bonus as I suffer from transient insomnia.’
Shark Burgers At Trini-Flavored Island Burger In East Flatbush Brooklyn
For $9.50, their shark burger will make you feel like you’re on vacation in Trinidad.
That’s what the two sisters who own Island Burger had in mind when they opened the East Flatbush fast-food restaurant at 915 Utica Ave. 18 months ago.
Picture Maracas Beach, where shark sandwiches are sold in huts right on the sand. Or Port of Spain, where sidewalk vendors serve hamburgers with a slice of pineapple, garlic sauce and cole slaw heaped on top.
“Shark is beach food,” said Linette Beckles, 34, who with her big sister Tracy Agarrat, 40 owns the takeout joint and six-seat eatery that dishes up a boneless filet of the fearsome fish.
The restaurant’s three chefs turn the terror of the deep into a tasty morsel by seasoning it for 12 hours before frying it and topping it with chadon beni — a sauce made of a pungent herb, culantro — tamarind sauce, cole slaw, lettuce and tomato.
After Beckles and her boyfriend were wowed by burgers they bought at a street stand during a visit to Port of Spain, she returned home to Mill Basin and told her sister to forget about the clothing store they’d talked about opening.
“Let’s sell burgers and fast food made the Trini way,” she said to y Agarrat of Crown Heights.
There are scads of West Indian restaurants in Central Brooklyn competing for customers with roti and peas and rice.
But the sibs couldn’t find anyone doing Trini burgers, and thought they could make a go of it.
To save money, they rented a storefront with a stove and other restaurant equipment the previous tenant left behind.
They’d worked in Manhattan food businesses — including a decade Agarrat spent as a restaurant manager for food-industry bigwig Stephen Hanson’s BR Guest.
New Book Released On Traditional Medicine And Women Healers In Trinidad
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad — Anthropologist Dr Kumar Mahabir will be launching his new book, Traditional Medicine and Women Healers in Trinidad, on Saturday evening at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
The 212-page book discusses the relationship between traditional healers and modern healthcare practitioners in Trinidad and Tobago. It focuses on folk masseuses, and the new mothers and newborns they treat.
The study is divided into three major chapters:
Chapter 1 explores the demographics of masseuses, their training, activity levels, remuneration, relationship with others, and types of disorders they treat.
Chapter 2 examines the care of the new mother with respect to seclusion and pollution, special foods, “setting” the womb back in place, herbal baths, and the chatti [thanksgiving ceremony].
Chapter 3 highlights the care of the newborn with regard to breast milk, neonatal jaundice, dew and evil elements, thrush and heat rash, and infant massage.
The two medical systems are presented in the context of racial, ethnic, class and gender dynamics which give rise to issues of power and control.
Traditional Medicine and Women Healers in Trinidad is located in the political-economic context of the Third World, which has a history of dependency on foreign goods and services rooted in the plantation economy.
The book also discusses the implications of the study for contemporary primary health care.
Mahabir is an assistant professor in the Centre for Education Programmes at the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT). He obtained his Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of Florida and is the author of eight books, including two national bestsellers Caribbean East Indian Recipes and Medicinal and Edible Plants used by East Indians of Trinidad and Tobago.
