Travel and Leisure Names St. Vincent One Of The Hottest Destinations For 2012
Travel and Leisure Names St. Vincent One Of The Hottest Destinations For 2012. A string of 32 islands just south of St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines has long been an under-the-radar getaway for the jet-setting elite. But recent developments—including a $240 million airport set to open on St. Vincent next year—are making the region accessible to a broader audience.
Built on volcanic black sand, the new Buccament Bay Resort(St. Vincent; 877/502-2022; doubles from $1,024, all-inclusive, three-night minimum) has 90 light-filled villas that gaze out on a secluded white-sand beach. Twenty miles south, tiny Mustique remains a playground for the likes of Mick Jagger and Tommy Hilfiger (and was a runner-up honeymoon pick for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge).
A handful of new villas are now available to rent from the Mustique Company(villas from $7,000 per week), including the four-bedroom Mimosa, a contemporary affair with a pebbled infinity pool, private chef, and dedicated utility vehicle for exploring the isle. A more affordable option is the four-bedroom Liselund, on a hillside overlooking the sea. Nearby, the 44-year-old private-island resort of Petit St. Vincent(doubles from $1,050, all-inclusive) has reopened after a top-to-bottom makeover: 22 stone-walled, thatched-roof cottages are done up in earthy tones and driftwood palapas now line the beach. There’s also a waterside restaurant and a tree-house-style spa, where an open-air hot-stone massage is the perfect end to the day.

St Lucia’s Economy to Grow 3.5 Percent in 2012: Report
Saint Lucian total GDP is projected to grow 3.5 percent in 2012, following an estimated 2.6 percent growth in 2011, according to a report from the United Nations’ Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean.
In 2010, the economy grew at 3.2 percent, following a 1.1 percent drop in 2009.
The Eastern Caribbean Currency Union overall is projected to grow at 2 percent in 2012.
Total growth in the Caribbean region is projected at 1.7 percent next year, according to ECLAC’s data.
The countries in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union grew by 1.5 percent in 2011, after two consecutive years of negative growth, driven primarily by brisker activity in the tourism sector.
The Eastern Caribbean is projected to grow 2 percent in 2012, with tourism activity having a positive spillover effect onto the rest of the area’s economy.
Grenada will host a United Nations environmental workshop next year, Environment Minister Joseph Gilbert announced.
Grenada will be the first country in the western hemisphere to host such a meeting.
“This workshop, which will be funded by the United Nations Environment Programme, will put Grenada on the map,” Gilbert said in his Christmas Message.
Grenada has been receiving support from a number of countries for climate initiatives, including Germany and Japan.
Germany and Grenada signed a $6.89 million “concept agreement” for projects aimed at fighting the adverse effects of climate change last month.
“One of the critical tasks for us now, as a government, is to ensure that when these environmental projects come on stream, that as many persons as possible obtain some degree of employment,” he said.
In the event you were under a rock somewhere, Melanie Amaro, the British Virgin Islands native won X Factor last night and a $5 million dollar recording contract. For those of us that may have been watching, we can remember Melanie letting the VI accent let loose when emotions got the best of her. She reminded us of who she really is when she made it past one of the final rounds in the event we were not paying attention during the many mini interviews. The British Virgin Islands along with the rest of the Caribbean is surely proud. VI MASSIVE!!!!
Cuba Boosts Use of Sugarcane Biomass To Generate Electricity
HAVANA, Cuba (ACN) — Members of the Cuban National Assembly (Parliament) discussed on Wednesday the potential of sugar mills in the Caribbean nation to generate electricity using industrial biomass, a natural material obtained during the cane sugar production process.
During a meeting of the Commission of Energy and the Environment of the Cuban Parliament on Wednesday, Angel Miguel Torres, director of Services to Industrial Plants of the AZCUBA Business Group, said that, thanks to the use of biomass as a source of electricity, the sugar industry contributed more than 80 gigawatts to the national grid in 2010, and the plan for this year is to reach 95 gigawatts.
Members of the Commission urged specialists to carry out comprehensive studies on this renewable, environment-friendly energy source in order to boost the use of biomass to generate electricity and increase the existing potential.
Biomass can either be used directly, or converted into other energy products such as biofuel.
One month after losing their home, school and every possession to Haiti’s earthquake, 100 children from the Maranatha School and Orphanage came together and created 208 masterpieces of art. The children had been sleeping outside, on the streets or under tents since the earthquake.
The project was the initiative of documentary filmmaker Kevin O’Hanlon (FilmsOnArtists) who collaborated with artist Richard Laurent and the Life For The World team to bring canvasses and painting supplies to Maranatha which has been the home and school to over 100 children since 2002.
The concept was to help the kids create their very first paintings. They painted what they wanted to occur in their lives – a home for their family, trees, clothes to wear, a car to drive to town in. The paintings were exhibited at O’Hanlon’s Rogue Space | Chelsea Gallery and the proceeds helped restore the orphanage to its original working condition.
On seeing the children’s painting exhibition, Frank and Caroline Fleischer, who together run a non-profit charitable organization, Franca Art and Fashion, decided to help. Caroline struck on the idea of creating a line of luxury scarves made of the finest cashmere featuring the children’s artwork. Caroline’s vision was to create a series of scarves which could be sold in stores around the world to support the children’s ongoing education and development. Caroline is CEO ofTalents For Fashion, a consulting and international recruitment agency for the fashion industry.Mr. Fleischer is the CEO of TMS Fashion, one of the largest clothing manufacturing companies in Asia. The scarves were manufactured in New Delhi, India. TMS Fashion has been praised by the UN for it’s exemplary adherence to Fair Trade practices and labour laws.
The net proceeds go 100% to building a sustainable community for the children of Maranatha and to creating a more secure future for them. Together with Franca Art and Fashion and the TMS Group, we will develop trade schools, provide for second and third level education, develop means for a stable food supply, and design a model for sustainable living in Haiti that will give hope and inspiration to neighboring communities and all of Haiti.
Embattled Dancehall/Reggae superstar, Mark Myrie, more popularly known as Buju Banton may have a lifeline after all following the revelation on Tuesday that an alleged United States government mishap could trigger the dismissal of his case.
According to media reports, Buju Banton could walk free from his conviction and subsequent ten year sentence on drug-related charges after the discovery that the U.S. government may have violated the Speedy Trial Act. The act states that any defendant involved in a case must be brought to trial by the government within a 70 day window; a right guaranteed under the Sixth Amendment in the American constitution. Additionally, said right is generally afforded to defendants so that they not subjected to unreasonably lengthy incarceration prior to a fair trial.
Buju Banton’s first trial took place in September 2010, nine months after his initial arrest by law enforcement officials in Florida and four months after Judge James Moody pushed back Buju’s initial court date without giving any specifics regarding why the case was postponed. His second trial, where he was later convicted, took place in February of this year, four months after he was granted bail in the case.
The U.S Supreme Court has developed a four part test considering length of the delay, the reasons for the delay, the defendant’s assertion of his right to a speedy trial, and the prejudice to the defendant in judging speedy trial claims. Any violations of the Speedy Trial Act could spark the dismissal of a criminal case given the state’s inability to bring the case to trial within a reasonable amount of time.
Buju Banton’s legal team filed an appeal last week in a Georgia appeals court, citing violation of said act whilst intimating that the prominent Reggae singjay was not a willing participant in any drug conspiracy.
Buju Banton was sentenced to ten years in prison this past February on three drug-related charges stemming from a December 2009 incident where he allegedly conspired to organize a drug deal within a police controlled warehouse.
For Large Scale Earthquake in Eastern Caribbean, a Question of When, Not If
By Alexander Britell
Could the Caribbean experience another earthquake like the devastating one in Port-au-Prince in 2010? The answer is yes – and it could be even more powerful, according to Dr Joan Latchman, the director of the Seismic Research Centre at the University of the West Indies. The Eastern Caribbean is a subduction zone, which makes it one of the areas of the world able to deliver extremely high-magnitude earthquakes. The Haiti quake measured around 7.0 on the Richter scale – not such a large-magnitude quake but made catastrophic due to the particular characteristics of its location near the capital, and a number of factors on the ground in Haiti. A potential quake in the Eastern Caribbean, Latchman says, could be as high as 8.0, like one seen in the 19th century. And for the Caribbean, it’s matter of when, not if. To learn more, Caribbean Journal talked to Latchman about Caribbean earthquakes, recent changes in seismic activity in the region and what the Caribbean needs to do to prepare.
Similar to what you are seeing in the BVI and Puerto Rico region, we have begun to see that sort of elevation in the area around Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis and Montserrat. In that little circle, we are seeing an elevation of activity. This is following a period where it was somewhat reduced, it was quiet. Over the years, since we have been monitoring the Antigua and Barbuda area, it has been one of the areas with high-level activity. Of course, there was the earthquake in 1974 north of Antigua. We know that area has the potential to generate a large-magnitude earthquake. The biggest we have seen in the area historically came in 1843, in the area southeast of Antigua, so we know historically that the area can generate a large-magnitude earthquake. So this elevation in activity is one that, while we cannot predict where it will lead, what it might culminate in, and how long it will take to do that, it does remind us of the kind of activity that we can face in the region, and the need for our being prepared for all times.
Can the region see a similar earthquake to the one in Haiti in 2010?
The Haiti earthquake was not such a large-magnitude earthquake. If you look at earthquakes of magnitude of 6.6 to 7.0 as being a class of earthquakes, you get ones like that around the world, about two every month. The consequences were significant because of the particular characteristics of location and depth and proximity to the capital city, with several poorly-constructed buildings and large numbers of people, large population density. So magnitude 6.6 to 7.0 is great in the Eastern Caribbean, indeed – we would get those earthquakes every few years, and we can have one of magnitude 7.0 in the region. That would be entirely consistent with the activity we are currently seeing.
US Congress Drops Bid To Restrict Travel and Remittances To Cuba
US Congress Drops Bid To Restrict Travel and Remittances To Cuba.
HAVANA, Cuba (ACN) — A bid to restrict travel and remittances to Cuba proposed by congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL.) was dropped from the spending bill currently under discussion in the US Congress, following protests by organizations and Cuban-Americans in the United States, who overwhelmingly and strongly expressed their support of unlimited travel to the Caribbean nation.
The bid, introduced as a rider attached to the spending bill, aimed at returning travel and remittances to Cuba by Cuban-Americans to the level set by former president George W. Bush in 2008, when it only one trip was allowed every three years for “family reunifications,” while there would also be a cap on remittances of $1,200 per year and a tighter definition of “family.”
In exchange — pressed by the far-right and anti-Cuba legislators who backed Diaz-Balart’s bid — the Congressional leadership also agreed to drop a measure by Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.) that would have eased a requirement that Cuba pay cash in advance when buying US goods permissible under the economic blockade imposed by Washington on the Caribbean country for almost 50 years.
