Hotel Group To Share Branding And Social Media Tips At CMEX In USVI
ST THOMAS, USVI — Thanks to a strong commitment to the Caribbean by one of the world’s largest lodging companies the twin messages of branding and social media will be featured at the Caribbean Media Exchange (CMEx) which opens in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands this week.
Jose Salvador Icaza, director of emerging markets and Caribbean franchise development, and Leon Thomas, a senior trainer, both of Choice Hotels International, will deliver a one-two punch at the action-packed 20th edition of CMEx in the US territory from December 1 to 5.
On Friday, December 1, Icaza will brief journalists, industry and tourism officials about new options in hotel franchising and what Choice Hotels International is doing to draw guests to the region. A key to ensuring memorable stays is giving guests options to try local restaurants, lounges, nightlife and shopping.
Thomas, a highly sought-after speaker of the Choice Hotels Choice University program, who spends more than 250 nights a year on the road training hoteliers, will conduct a social media workshop on Sunday, December 4 to stress the differences between communicating on personal social media networks and using social media for business.
“We are once again pleased that two of our industry experts are available to share their experiences and expertise to such an important group of stakeholders,” said Brian Parker, vice-president of emerging markets and new business development for Choice Hotels.
Both Icaza and Thomas were in the US territory in September for the annual Small Hotels Conference, produced by the USVI Department of Tourism.
Parker thanked the leadership of the USVI Department of Tourism for being such gracious hosts of Choice Hotels International, and reiterated the company’s commitment to continue working with the territory and to supporting CMEx as it recognizes 10 years of service to the Caribbean.
“Choice is pleased with its association with CMEx over the years, and we wish attendees a successful, inspiring and educational conference,” said Parker.

Grenada is among four Caribbean islands which could be in the route of a proposed inter-island fast ferry that would travel between Trinidad, Grenada, St Vincent, St Lucia and Barbados — promising service to all the islands in one day.
The subject was discussed between the five countries during the recently-held CARICOM Council for Trade and Economic Development in Guyana.
Grenadian Trade Minister Joseph Gilbert said he was “very optimistic that the Trinidad-based ferry service could come on stream as early as the middle of next year.”
Reports from Cadiz said requests for proposals on the type and design of the ferry have already been issued by the as-yet-unnamed investor backing the project.
“The proposed ferry would have a capacity for about 300 passengers and would be able to carry ‘roll-on, roll-off containerized cargo as well as motor vehicles,” Gilbert said.
The Grenada-Trinidad leg would take about two hours.

Martinique’s Iconic Fort-De-France Bay Among Latest Members Of Most Beautiful Bays Club
NEW YORK, USA — The Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World, an international association founded in 1997 to promote the preservation and sustainable management of coastal areas, has inducted Martinique’s Fort-de-France among its latest members.
The announcement was made earlier this month at World Travel Market (WTM), the leading global event for the travel industry held annually in London.
“We’re quite pleased to receive this wonderful recognition in support of a true natural treasure of Martinique,” said Karine Roy-Camille, Tourism Commissioner of the Martinique Tourism Authority. “The beauty of Fort-de-France Bay is simply spectacular, especially for those visiting the island on a cruise. From aboard ship, visitors entering the Bay enjoy sweeping views stretching over 100 kilometers from the town of Schoelcher in the north, all the way to Anses d’ Arlets in the south; just breathtaking!”

Created in 1997, with its headquarters in France, The Club pursues objectives of preservation, enhancement and promotion of the natural, cultural and economic importance of bays.
On Life Teachings, I Wayne rejects materialism (“Wise and Fearless”), predicts the imminent downfall of Babylon (“Burn Down Sodom”), rails against the violence associated with “Drug and Rum Vibes” and successfully ventures into dancehall terrain with “The Fire Song” featuring Assassin (a.k.a. Agent Sasco). Understanding the significance of creating a balance in life as well as in music, several songs on “Life Teachings” display a romantic sensitivity not often seen from I Wayne. “The Nile”, “Empress Divine”, “I Care For You” and “Life Service” each extol women who uphold natural livity (lifestyle). “Life Joy,” produced by Marcus “Icus” Deacon, is a hit bound, sultry R&B flavored duet featuring popular Jamaican songstress Etana. The resplendent roots reggae gem, “Real and Clean” is I Wayne’s sweetly seductive declaration of love set to an irresistible one-drop beat.
Born Cliffroy Taylor, 32 years ago, the Kingston native, captivated fans in 2005 with his debut release Lava Ground and its trilogy of hits, “Can’t Satisfy Her,” “Living In Love” and “Lava Ground;” and in 2007 he released his second album Book Of Life, which also landed on Billboard’s Reggae chart. “Can’t Satisfy Her” is still considered one of the most captivating reggae tunes, which charted to no. 31 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and received heavy rotation at New York’s Hot 97 radio station.

Fisheries officials in Anguilla said the population of the invasive lionfish (Pterois volitans) appears to be growing at a rapid rate and poses a serious threat to its coral reef ecosystems.
The Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources (DFMR) said more than thirty lionfish have been captured within weeks at three different locations around the island.
“This increase in lionfish numbers does not bode well for our coral reef fishery resources and the ecological well-being of the coral reef ecosystems in Anguilla,” the DFMR stated.
So far, over 100 lionfish specimens have been captured and dissected as the DFMR tries to determine what they are feeding on.
“The lionfish poses a serious threat to local fisheries because they are voracious predators which can devour the young of many of the commercial fish species in Anguilla as well as by out-competing the adult commercial fish for food,” the department further stated.
“By severely reducing the adult coral reef fish populations, lionfish have the potential to upset the natural balance and functioning of coral reef ecosystems.”
The DFMR said it will continue its targeted removal programme at a number of popular near-shore coral reef sites and beaches.
It disclosed plans for a series of awareness sessions with members of the fishing community in the coming months to gain support for a number of proposed comprehensive management measures.
These include the implementation of no-take Marine Protected Areas and the protection of some species of grouper, which preliminary studies indicate may be one of the few known predators of lionfish in the Caribbean at present.
The department added: “Lionfish hunts or removal programmes alone will not be enough to effectively control the rapidly increasing lionfish population in Anguilla, and so our best option is to protect a number of grouper species and hope that over time these grouper species, as well as other large reef fish, will adapt and prey on the destructive lionfish species in Anguilla’s waters.

Philippines Suspends Ban On Workers To Caribbean States
MANILA, Philippines, Monday November 14, 2011 - Caribbean countries that benefit from Filipino labour have been granted a temporary reprieve from a govenment ban on their deployment.
The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has suspended the implementation of a recently announced order that prohibited Filipinos from working in 41 countries, including Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the Cayman Islands and Dominica.
The suspension followed concerns of possible backlash from restrictions, reports said.
The ban was issued after the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs certified that the countries covered by the restriction do not observe measures necessary to protect migrant workers from abuse.
The recall resolution signed by Labour Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz and Poea Administrator Carlos Cao states that the implementation of the worker deployment ban would be withheld for 90 days from November 18 to facilitate bilateral agreements with the 41 countries.
It said this would allow the countries to apply measures for the protection of Filipinos who serve as guest workers in their countries.
“DFA Secretary Albert Del Rosario has requested the Poea governing board for a 90-day reprieve on the implementation of the deployment ban to provide enough time to work on the possible bilateral agreements with the 41 countries… , in the meantime (he) has recalled the certifications issued for these countries,” the POEA resolution said.
The other affected Caribbean countries are Cuba, Haiti, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Turks and Caicos, and the US Virgin Islands.
An estimated 2,400 Filipino workers are employed on permits in the Cayman Islands alone.
Arturo Ursua who serves as the Honorary Consul for the Philippines in Cayman said the territory’s labour laws protect all workers.
However, he said there is need for further discussions on the worker ban issue.
“Such a dialogue would be to the benefit of Filipino workers already there and those planning to seek gainful employment in those countries…we will do all that is necessary to protect our nationals overseas,”
